Cooperation announced between Magritek and Fraunhofer IBMT
As a result of the success of a recently completed collaboration, the Fraunhofer IBMT has agreed to support the innovative company Magritek Limited in New Zealand with know-how and specialized products for customers.
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is the largest organization for applied research of direct utility to private and public enterprise and of wide benefit to society in Europe. There are 56 Fraunhofer Institutes in Germany at 40 different locations, 13 000 employees, and research centers and representative offices in Europe, USA, Asia and in the Middle East.
Magritek is a spin-off technology company based in Wellington, New Zealand, that was established in 2004. The company develops new, portable and modular NMR spectrometers, the like of which are unavailable from any other commercial company at present.
Among other things, these devices have been used for environmental research in Antarctica, non-invasive humidity measurements and the characterization of the structure and dynamics of polymers and food on a molecular level. In addition, these devices have been integrated with the cutting-edge in hand-held NMR technology.
The current generation of Magritek products can be powered by batteries and generate the necessary magnetic fields by either using permanent magnets or the Earth's magnetic field.
A new potential application of these devices is for non-invasive, on-line quality control in production lines.
The Fraunhofer IBMT has agreed to develop new, customized applications for the "KEA NMR MOLE" system and will provide technical support for these systems in Germany and Europe. In addition Fraunhofer IBMT is in close collaboration to the work with Magritek on future technical developments of the overall system.
Magritek is led by Dr. Andrew Coy (CEO), and on the board of directors is Professor Paul T. Callaghan, one of the inventors, who has received many honors for his years of research in the area of NMR.
Those involved in this collaboration on behalf of the Fraunhofer IBMT include Professor Dr. Guenter Fuhr (Director of the IBMT), Dr. Frank Volke (Head of the NMR and MRI group at IBMT) and Dr. Bertram Manz (PhD NZ).

Magritek recently sponsored and attended the 5th Colloquium on Mobile NMR in Perugia, Italy. The magritek stand demonstrated our brand new mobile NMR spectrometer with an NMR-MOUSE. This system is a complete revolution in mobile NMR technology. Our working name for the spectrometer system is Lapspec because it fits inside a standard laptop computer carry bag. A complete Lapspec NMR solution, including an NMR-MOUSE probe, will be available for sale in the very near future. Watch this space!

Magritek recently attended and was a corporate sponsor of the 8th International Conference on Magnetic Resonance Microscopy in Utsunomiya, Japan. The magritek stand included a portable Terranova Earth?s field NMR system. Meeting participants were able to observe the Terranova system in action, running standard NMR experiments such as CPMG and relaxation time measurements as well as some unusual applications such as NMR of a beer in a can! Some photos from our time in Japan are shown below.
