About Us
The Company
Founded in 2004, Magritek is an advanced technology company exporting from New Zealand to customers all over the world. The initial technology and IP used in Magritek products was developed by research teams at both Massey University and Victoria University of Wellington. Today, Magritek provides complete NMR and MRI system solutions for industrial applications, as well as components and subsystems suitable for research laboratories. The company has joint products and development projects with other leading technology companies such as ACT in Aachen, Germany. Magritek is headquartered in Wellington, New Zealand.
The Technology
Most of us are familiar with Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, through the medical imaging systems seen in hospitals. These powerful systems take high resolution images of the internal structures of the body and provide invaluable information for patient diagnosis. The related term, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, or NMR, refers to the broader field of physics that underpins MRI. NMR is the name used for more general spectroscopy applications where imaging is not involved.

Magritek designs and builds compact instruments that use the same sophisticated NMR and MRI methods to look inside a range of different items, such as rocks, living plants, paintings, and foods such as chocolate or seeds.
For example, our recently introduced Rock Core Analyzer uses NMR to look inside rocks and measure the fluid content of a rock sample, typically taken from an oil field. These measurements provide detailed information on the size of pores and the motion of the fluid through the rock.

The Magritek/ACT single sided NMR MOUSE allows us to look inside paintings at the layers beneath the surface.

Our compact and robust instruments are ideal for making measurements in harsh environments.

Teaching labs around the world use the Magritek Terranova-MRI teaching system as a practical, hands-on approach to teaching new generations of students the fundamentals of NMR and MRI.

Our set of ten short tutorial videos by Sir Paul Callaghan is an excellent starting point for learning the basics of NMR and MRI. For further detail and links on NMR and MRI, go to our Science Page.
